GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable text editor. Emacs stands for Editor MACroS. Development of the first Emacs began in the mid-1970s and continues actively as of 2015. The original EMACS was written in 1976 by Richard Stallman and Guy L. Steele, Jr as a set of Editor MACroS for the TECO editor (Text Editor Character Oriented). The most popular, and most ported, version of Emacs is GNU Emacs, which was created by Stallman for the GNU Project This is the cornerstone of applications of the GNU project. Most Emacs commands are based on a combination of CTR+? , CTR+x+?, CTR+c+?, ESC+? (where ? is some key).XEmacs is a variant that branched from GNU Emacs in 1991.The main features of Emacs are,
