Cannot show graphical login display

Postby linuxczar » Mon Feb 02, 2015 1:08 pm

Hi all,

I'm running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6.3.
I already installed the X Window package during installation and the graphical login display can be shown normally after installation.

When I change the /etc/inittab from 5 to 3 and reboot it, it can show the terminal mode login after rebooting.

However, when i change the /etc/inittab back to 5, it will show blank screen after the rebooting.

I tried to reinstall GNOME desktop environment using following command, but it still doesn't work:
yum reinstall "@X Window System" @Desktop

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Hi,

First thing to try is to login as root and use 'dtlogin' (see man page) to disable and then enable the GUI.

If that doesn't fix it Google "RHEL X11 troubleshooting"

Also, remember that X11 and GNOME aren't the same thing. X11 is the Windowing subsystem and GNOME is a desktop environment that displays through X11.
