Most operating system distributions based on Linux as kernel are basically modified versions of the GNU operating system.GNU operating system was began to develop in 1984.The goal of GNU project was develop a complete free operating system. And did not develop all the part by themselves, but the led the way and they develop most of the central components forming the largest single contribution to the whole system.
Gnu is typically used with a kernel called Linux developed by Linus Torvalds. This combination is the GNU/Linux operating system.GNU/Linux is used by the millions, though many call it Linux by mistake.
